About This Service
A printed or vinyl sign can copy a lot of things, but it can't replicate the depth of hand-laid gold leaf or the character of lettering painted by someone who's spent years learning the trade. On a heritage building or a shopfront that's meant to carry that character, a machine-cut substitute is usually the thing that looks wrong, not the thing that looks modern.
Peak Install's traditional sign writing is carried out by our own in-house signwriters, hand-painted lettering, gold-leaf application, and custom typography worked directly onto the substrate rather than printed and applied. We work across specialty substrates, timber, glass and metal among them, and we take on heritage restoration work where a sign needs to be brought back to match its original design rather than replaced with something new.
Heritage restoration in particular is closer to research than routine painting, working from what's there, what's documented, and what the original signwriter would actually have done, not just repainting over the top of it.

How Peak Install Can Help
Hand sign writing starts with the design and typography, not the paint. We work through the lettering style, layout and finish with you before anything goes on the substrate, since that's the decision that's hardest to change once gold leaf or paint is down.
Gold-leaf application is its own skill within the trade, sizing the surface, laying the leaf, burnishing it back, done properly it holds up for years outdoors, done poorly it lifts and tarnishes within months. It's slower than any printed process, and that's the trade-off for a finish nothing printed can match.
On heritage work, we're often restoring to a brief that's partly historical record and partly judgement call, matching a typeface, a colour, or a technique that may not exist in any surviving photograph. That's a different job to standard signage installation, and we treat it as one.
